Our 2026 Apprentice Outing

Author: Darius Petershofer, 3rd year apprentice – Welding Technology

A look behind the scenes: the ÖBB track construction site between Linz and Marchtrenk.

The day began for all of us with a real highlight right by the track. We had the opportunity to visit the ÖBB’s major four-track construction site between Linz and Marchtrenk. It was impressive to see the logistical feat behind the modernisation of our infrastructure.

On site, the experts explained the individual steps of track construction to us: from the sub-base through rapid laying to the precise, solid welding of the rails. It was particularly exciting to see the enormous construction machinery, which one usually only sees from a distance or through a train window. This hands-on experience showed us just how important precision and teamwork are – and how complex the engineering and construction work must be to ensure smooth train operations.

A culinary treat at the “Josef” restaurant in Linz

After taking in all the technical details and breathing in the cold, fresh air on the building site, we’d earned ourselves a break. Together, we made our way into Linz city centre, to the traditional restaurant ‘Josef’. In a cosy atmosphere, we were able to chat about our experiences over a superb meal. Whether it was Wiener schnitzel, burgers or vegetarian delicacies – the choice was huge and the atmosphere lively. This time away from the daily grind was ideal for getting to know our colleagues from the different years of the apprenticeship even better and for strengthening our team spirit.

Action and team spirit

Well-fed, we then headed to Pasching’s ‘Plus City’ for a spot of bowling. There, the sporting part of the day awaited us: a bowling tournament featuring three teams of six people each! We competed against one another in teams drawn at random. There was plenty of laughter and cheering, and a touch of friendly rivalry was in the air too. It was the perfect end to an all-round successful day.

My personal conclusion

A very successful day combining professional development, good food and plenty of action. We’re not only taking home new knowledge about track construction, but also lots of wonderful memories with the team. A big thank you to our boss and everyone who made this trip possible.
